result of hard training on the core. No sit-ups or crunches will ever achieve 
this look or result in such a powerful core. So, no, this isn't from mindlessly 
cranking out sit-ups. Total number of sit-ups done in the last 25 years: Zero. What do obliques do? They stabilize the trunk, and also provide rotational 
power. For a climber or martial artist, this provides a huge advantage. Strong obliques nearly guarantee no back pain, too. |  |  | At left, again at age 56. This shot shows shoulder striations, chest, 
big veins, and again those big obliques. Many people assume this is the result of "doing lots of cardio." In fact, 
Mark does absolutely zero "cardio work." Real athletes don't "do cardio" because it isn't necessary. If you train with 
intensity, the cardio portion takes care of itself. An intensity-centric weight 
trainer is breathing hard between sets. Those who "do cardio" see their calorie burn go up, but only during the 
cardio session. Then their cortisol goes up, which causes them to store fat 
again. That's why those folks doing all that treadmill time just can't seem to 
shed the "weight" (body fat). You don't see those big obliques on competitive bodybuilders, because they 
"expand the waistline" (Mark wears a size 31 pant, so it isn't expanding that 
much). Vince Gironda absolutely barred his trainees from doing hanging leg raises or 
anything that developed the obliques because the tapered look is so important to 
those competitive bodybuilders. But there is a functional cost to it. |  |  | At left, again age 56. You can see a lot of definition, even at this 
wide angle. What else do you see? This shot was intended to illustrate someone about to go into motion, evoking 
the image of a coiled spring. You can see the tension in the right leg but also 
in the hips where the motion is being initiated from. Again, you see the big obliques, big chest, etc. This isn't a competitive 
body builder's look, but it is a look that says "powerful body." From these photos, it should now be clear that age does not make you fat and 
weak. Your choices make you fat and weak. But you can choose to be lean and
