Staying Young

How can you beat aging? Jack LaLanne, at almost 90, has more stamina than the typical 20-year old. So, while there is no fountain of youth, you certainly don't have to grow old as fast as most people do. Let's look at some basics:

  • Activity
  • Attitude
  • Exercise
  • Genetics
  • Nutrition
  • Rest
  • Toxins

Activity

Mental, social, spiritual, and physical activity are all ways to "use it or lose it." You can find activity from many different venues. If you don't know where to start, visit your local library. You won't have enough years in your life to read everything there, so that already addresses the mental stimulation. The library also has resources on what is happening in your community. And, there is nothing stopping you from forming a club or organization of your own. Just don't sit around watching television or complaining there is nothing to do. Create or find what is missing.

Attitude

Hatred and anger induce illness and aging, simple as that. Rather than dwell on past hurts, rather than blame other people, rather than whine and complain, look for what you can that is positive. Someone is rude to you? See it as an opportunity to set an example of kindness. Whatever your lot, stewing over it just cooks you. When you smile from the inside out, you look younger. The more you do this, the more the effect goes beyond just looks.

More about staying young, below....

Exercise

Weight-bearing exercise signals the bones to store calcium. Lack of this exercise causes osteoporosis, no matter how much calcium you take. Exercise pumps the blood through your system, giving youth-making oxygen to all your cells. It also helps rid you of waste. Further, the right exercise strengthens your back, so you can have youthful posture and the strength that goes with it.

Nutrition

OK, we're going to push our products here a bit. But, we're also going to give you some general advice.

  • Eat six small meals a day--this levels out your blood sugar and maximizes nutrient absorption.
  • No soda, sugar, or hydrogenated oil--carbonated beverages cause bone loss, sugar causes diabetes, and hydrogenated oils are just plain nasty.
  • Eat carbohydrates at breakfast and after physical exertion--these are two times when your cells are most able to take up the carbos. Adding protein at the same time will maximize cell use of protein.
  • When you eat out, eat only half the meat portion. In other words, share a steak with a friend. Restaurants serve up a double portion, and that simply isn't good for you. Why have undigested red meat fermenting in your bowels so you get cancer? The average American male at the age of 53 has 6 pounds of this stuff just fermenting away. Not a pretty picture.

Rest

We sell a course on overcoming sleeplessness. Buying this may be the best investment you've ever made. Did you know that a person who is 20% sleep-deprived has the mental acuity of a person who is legally intoxicated? Did you also know the typical American does not get enough rest? For most people, this is easily fixable with the right information.

Toxins

These are all around us. Our bodies have enormous capacity to handle toxins, but the less it has to do so the less the body ages. Here are some toxins to avoid--use common sense to figure out how:

  • Excess sunlight (ages your skin)
  • Cigarette smoke (doesn't matter which end of the cigarette--smoke is smoke; ages your skin, causes premature baldness, and takes years of your useful life)
  • Chlorine and other chemicals in tap water (carcinogens and tissue damagers--use a filter)
  • Butter (saturated fat)
  • Hydrogenated oils (already mentioned)
  • Dust and dust mites (clean often!)
  • Household chemicals and cleaners
  • Formaldehyde in pressed wood furniture and other pressed wood items
  • Fumes from new plastic devices

You can be younger, you can fight age. Here, we have just brought you the highlights. Most people won't take even these basic steps, because doing so requires discipline. If you decide to take them, you will look and feel younger.

Article Authorship

The articles on this site are authoritative, because:

  • Every contributor is an expert in his or her field.
  • The articles comply with the accepted principles of the bodybuilder literature.
  • The articles comply with the teachings of such luminaries as 8-time Mr. Olympia Lee Haney.

Where an article is not bylined with a specific author's name, it was written by Mark Lamendola (see photos on home page and elsewhere on this site). Mark is a 4th degree blackbelt, has not been sick since 1971, and has not missed a workout since 1977. Just an example of how Mark knows what he's talking about: In his early 50s, Mark demonstrated a biceps curl using half his body weight. That's a Jack LaLanne level stunt. Few people can even come close. If you want to know how to build a strong, beautiful body, read the articles here.
