Lose Weight, Not Hair!

by Jenni J., http://www.fitnessandfreebies.com

You know how you are often told to be careful not to lose too much weight too quickly? Well, it turns out this can apply to hair loss as well as weight loss. If you cut back too far on protein intake or calories, you can stop hair production.

You can prevent this from occurring:
  • Make sure that you get the recommended daily allowance of protein for your desired, healthy body weight. For example, if you would like to weigh-in at 140 pounds, divide that number by 2.2 to get your weight in kilograms, then multiply by 0.8. The resulting number, in this case 51g, is your minimum daily protein requirement
  • Try not to lose more than two pounds a week. Your hair should start growing again in a few weeks and a noticeable result in six months.
  • Take care of your hair. Don't over-wash it. Your scalp will stay clean, even if you don't wash your hair daily. Brush it to remove pollen and other matter.
  • Use a good conditioner.
  • Wear a hat, if you are out in the sun.
  • Don't wear a hat that is too tight (impedes bloodflow to the hair roots).
  • Don't wear a hat that doesn't let your scalp breathe.
  • Don't brush your hair when it's wet--doing so will break and thin the hairs

It should also be noted that for those who are not losing weight but are losing hair, you could have a medical condition such as a hormonal problem. Check with your doctor.

Good sources of protein are chicken, fish, tofu, peanut butter, beans, milk, yogurt, eggs and bread.

Update on Male Hair Loss

* A reversible form of balding, called hair shedding, causes excessive scalp oil which in turn, causes hair follicles to clog. The dandruff shampoo called Nizoral appears to aid in fighting and preventing thinning hair.

* Researchers at Harvard discovered a protein called VEGF. This protein improves the bloodflow to the hair follicles, producing thicker hair. Drugs are now in development to aid men in increasing VEGF production.

* Men who take Propecia have 280 more scalp hairs per square inch than men using placebos, according to a new five-year study.

To your health!
