The sad truth about the Splurge and Purge Diet
Long a favorite of the anorexia crowd, this diet gets results. Not good results, but results nonetheless. People on this diet eat whatever they want, to satisfy their cravings. Then, they throw it all up. The net result is a very low caloric intake, which causes them to lose weight.
Unfortunately, that weight loss consists primarily of healthy tissue: muscle, bone, and organs are the first to go. Fat stubbornly leaves the body, because the body is adapting to what it thinks is a starvation environment.
This is the diet that killed Karen Carpenter. This diet won't make you pretty, nor will it make you lean and strong. It will just make you gaunt. The funny thing is, as your malnourished skin begins to hang on your frame, you look at it and think you are fat. So, you don't ever reach your goals. Plus, you burn your throat with stomach acid--something that greatly increases the risk for half a dozen different cancers. Plus, you stink!
A much better approach is to figure out how many calories you need to sustain your lean mass and then head that direction. Avoid highly processed foods, root vegetables, and junk food. If you then exercise properly, you'll find your body reaches its own ideal proportions. You will look and feel beautiful.
